GM of a new branch
We're in no hurry to open more branches of Tabletop Library. It may never happen. But we're open to talking about it!
If we did open another location, we like the idea of starting by finding the right General Manager. A decent space is findable in most cities. Someone who can turn a room full of strangers into a community that shows up every week is not. That person is the scarce ingredient. The lease, the buildout, the collection — all of it is downstream of them.
Who we're looking for
- You've started things from nothing — a club, a series, a scene — and kept them alive well past the honeymoon.
- You've run communities and events as real work, not just as enthusiasm.
- You're already deep in your local board game community, and the people in it know you.
For a sense of what that looks like in practice, here's Vera's (our Berkeley GM) background. Not as a template or bar to clear, but as an idea of a peer.
- Founded or co-founded several community groups, including the Ghetto Gourmet, Loose Strings, an amateur tennis club (120 members), and Oakland Board Gamers (750 members).
- Over ten years working as a community and events manager.
- Plays, on average, one board game per day.
If you read that and recognized yourself, we should talk.
What you'd do
As the GM, you'd be in charge of launching and running a new branch. That means:
- Finding a space
- Overseeing the buildout
- Hiring your team of game stewards
- Figuring out how to sign up 100+ members before we open
- Running it once it's open: the programming, the collection, the P&L, and the culture on the floor
